Top 7 Exercise Myths
Myth 1: Cardio is the only way to lose weight.
FACT: Cardio is good for the heart and increases endurance, but is not the best way to burn fat. Since muscles have higher energy stores in them, the body will actually begin to feed off those after extended cardio regimens, rather than fat. 10-15 minutes of cardio is the best range in which your heart and endurance get what they need, while still not running into the zone of your body feeding off its muscle.
Myth 2: Your weight is the end all, be all.
FACT: Your weight has nothing to do with your fitness levels. Muscles weighs more than fat, so it’s common to see an increase in weight when performing lifting regimens after a few weeks. Your overall fat percentage need to reduce. And measure by how your clothes fit and how you feel overall.
Myth 3: Your cardio machine is counting the calories you are burning.
FACT: Caloric burning depends on one’s age, fitness level, BMI and sex. Different people with different fitness level, age group burn calories at different rate. Some machines do not even ask for weight or sex.
Myth 4: No pain, no gain.
FACT: It’s important to remember that your workouts should be challenging, but if you’re experiencing pain, you should stop. In fact, if your workouts hurt, you probably won’t be as motivated to continue them, which is exactly the opposite of what your workouts should be. However, some muscle soreness is unavoidable, especially if you are new to exercise.
Myth 5: You can eat whatever you want to as long as you workout.
FACT: Right nutrition determines how long you would stay in the game. After exercise, the body goes into the rest and recovery mode. If you are not eating properly and feeding yourself with junk, it only means your body will not fully achieve the benefits of the exercise session. And in fact, your performance will also be affected.
Myth 6: You have to do cardio in the morning or an empty stomach to burn fat.
FACT: Our body metabolism is at the lowest in the morning because you have not eaten for eight hours. Eat a balanced breakfast and you will be able to exercise longer and your metabolism will already be working.
Myth 7: Exercise is worthless if I can’t do it regularly for hours.
FACT: If you don’t think you can fit in a workout every single day for the rest of your life, that’s no reason not to go for a walk today. Even a half-hour walk can make a big difference. Any activity is good activity—don’t cheat your body out of it because you don’t think you’ll be able to do it again tomorrow, or the next day.
